The Woodlands Township Board voted unanimously to spend $4.6 million on 200 EV charging stations at parks, rec centers, and ride-share lots. The money comes from a mix of federal grants and township reserves.
The chargers will go in at 32 locations. The biggest clusters will be at Rob Fleming Park, Bear Branch Sports Fields, and the Town Center ride-share lots. About 40 of the 200 will be DC fast chargers that can get a battery to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. The rest will be slower Level 2 units.
EV registrations in The Woodlands have gone up 340 percent since 2022. There are about 4,800 electric cars registered here now, but only 38 public charging ports. Communities of similar size in the Dallas and Austin areas have a lot more.
The first batch should be up and running by September 2026, with everything done by early 2027. A private company will operate the stations at market rates so the system doesn't need ongoing taxpayer money.
